The Case:
Lim, 55, a Shin Min Daily News executive editor, is alleged to have run a red light, according to the charges against her.

Ms Ong, 32, a civil servant, said she had been in the back seat of a car driven by her husband, with her baby on her lap.

Having stopped at the Stevens Road junction, they were waiting for the lights to change to make a right turn into Dunearn Road.

Then she saw Lim's car, which she described as a dark-coloured sports utility vehicle (SUV), coming from the opposite direction.

It continued moving after hitting the motorcycle and passed Ms Ong's car before stopping.

"The driver had her left hand to the left side of her face and I had the impression that she was using a cellphone, but I cannot be sure," Ms Ong said.

But she agreed with Lim's lawyer Subhas Anandan that Lim could have held her hand to her face in shock.

Another witness in court yesterday, CityCab taxi driver Lim Kian Seng, 51, said he had stopped his taxi next to Mr Pattiselanno's motorcycle at the red light just before the junction in Dunearn Road.

The pair on the motorbike had caught his attention because the motorcyclist was a lot older than his pillion rider and the bike was quite "fancy", said Mr Lim.

As the lights changed in his favour, he followed the motorcycle to turn right into Stevens Road, but had to "jam his brakes" when the crash occurred and the pair were thrown off the motorcycle.

He said that he was surprised the SUV driver had not tried to stop or taken evasive action before the impact.

After his passenger had agreed to stop to render aid, Mr Lim swung his taxi diagonally across the road to prevent other cars from crashing into the injured pair.

He called the police and found both victims badly hurt.

Then, Lim came out of her SUV and started screaming "Oh, my God" repeatedly.

The Verdict:
IT WAS a day of twists and turns for a newspaper editor in the High Court on Friday.
Lim Hong Eng, the 56-year-old executive editor of Shin Min Daily News, was there to hear the outcome of the appeal against her sentence for knocking down and injuring a motorcyclist and killing the woman riding pillion with him.

The appeal against her conviction was rejected, but the 11/2-year jail term dealt by a lower court was cut to a day's jail and a $12,000 fine on two charges.

Later in the morning, defence lawyers and the prosecutor ran some checks and realised that there had been a sentencing error for one of the charges.

The mistake was for the charge of causing death by dangerous driving, for which she was jailed a day and fined $10,000. The Road Traffic Act does not make a provision for a fine for this offence, only jail-time.

So it was back to court after the lunch hour. When Lim re-entered the courtroom, the smile that lit up her face upon the morning's verdict was replaced by an anxious expression.

Her counsel Subhas Anandan told Justice Choo Han Teck that he may have misled the judge with his arguments for a 'high fine' to be imposed on Lim.

Justice Choo set aside the fine, saying: 'In the circumstances, it will not be right to increase the custodial sentence to the detriment of the accused.'

Relief washed over Lim to know that the fine's being set aside was not going to mean a longer jail term for her. The judge made it clear, however, that this was a one-off case and was not to be used as a sentencing precedent.

Mr Anandan later told reporters that Lim will donate to charity the $10,000 she was to pay in the fine.

Dunno abt u guys.. but running pass a red light and resulting a death, no matter it's intentional or not, giving onli 1 day jail sounds like TOTAL bullshit to me... and looking at her post, wat's 12k to her anyway?

edit: chai showed me the chinese papers, seems tt it's not 12k fine anymore.. it's 2k fine plus suspension of her liscene for 10yrs... and it's still a 1 day jailterm...

Hairdresser turns robber into sex slave

A young hairdresser in Kaluga, Central Russia, locked a robber who tried to steal her money in the basement of the beauty salon. After that, she has brutally raped her hostage for three days. A court in Kaluga has filed criminal charges against both of them, the Russian website Newsru.com reports.

The robber, who has not been named, burst into the salon armed with shotgun at about 17.00 on March 14. He demanded money. There were two hairdressers and one client in the salon at the time. One of hairdressers, who was studying judo and taekwondo, disabled the robber with a smashing body blow. Then she carried the unlucky robber to the basement and bound him with a hairdryer cord.

The hairdresser told her scared colleague and the client that she would call the police. But she did not. After work, instead of calling the police, she made her hostage undress. The perverted hairdresser forced the hostage to take several Viagra tablets. She chained the unfortunate robber with pink furry wristbands and painfully raped him for the next three days.

After his release, the exhausted robber filed charges against the perverted woman. The frenulum of his penis was torn as a consequence of rape session.

“That’s ridiculous. We had sex just a couple times. I brought him brand new jeans. I fed him every day and gave him one thousand rubles ($25) before his release,” the hairdresser said.

In response, she filed charges against the robber.

The robber admitted that the hairdresser really did feed him royally.

“I actually don’t know what will happen to them. But it’s a pity that they could not meet in the cell. They would be a great couple,” one of the police officers said.

Russian doctors find tree growing in man's lung

MOSCOW, April 13 (RIA Novosti) - Surgeons in Russia's Urals Region were staggered to find a 5-centimeter high spruce growing inside a man's lung, the Komsomolskaya Pravda daily reported on Monday. (VIDEO)

The discovery was made while Artyom Sidorkin, 28, from the Urals city of Izhevsk, was undergoing surgery.

Sidorkin had complained of extreme pain in his chest and had been coughing up blood, doctors suspected cancer.

"I blinked three times and thought I was seeing things," Izhevsk surgeon Vladimir Kamashev told the paper.

Medical staff believe Sidorkin had somehow inhaled a seed, which later sprouted inside his lung. The spruce, which was touching the man's capillaries and causing severe pain, was removed.

"It was very painful. But to be honest I did not feel any foreign object inside me," Sidorkin said.

Man bites snake in epic struggle

Police said the python involved in the attack was 13ft (4m) long
A Kenyan man bit a python which wrapped him in its coils and dragged him up a tree during a fierce three-hour struggle, police have told the BBC.

The serpent seized farm worker Ben Nyaumbe in the Malindi area of Kenya's Indian Ocean coast at the weekend.

Mr Nyaumbe bit the snake on the tip of the tail during the exhausting battle in the village of Sabaki.

Police rescued Mr Nyaumbe and captured the 13ft (4m) reptile, before taking it to a sanctuary, but it later escaped.

The victim told police he managed to reach his mobile phone from his pocket to raise the alarm when the python momentarily eased its grip after hauling him up a tree on Saturday evening.

Mr Nyaumbe used his shirt to smother the snake's head and prevent it from swallowing him.
His employer arrived with police and villagers, who tied the python with a rope and pulled them both down from the tree with a thud.

Peter Katam, superintendent of police in Malindi district, told the BBC News website: "Two officers on patrol were called and they found this man was struggling with a snake on a tree.
"The snake had coiled his hands and was trying to swallow him but he struggled very hard. The officers and villagers managed to rescue him and he was freed.

"He himself was injured on the lower lip of the mouth - it was bleeding a little bit - as the tip of the snake's tail was sharp when he said he bit it."

Mr Nyaumbe told the Daily Nation newspaper how he resorted to desperate measures after the python, which had apparently been hunting livestock, encircled his upper body in its coils.
"I stepped on a spongy thing on the ground and suddenly my leg was entangled with the body of a huge python," he said.
"I had to bite it."

'Very mysterious'
Supt Katam told the BBC the officers had wanted to shoot the snake but could not do so for fearing of injuring Mr Nyaumbe.
"If it wasn't for the villagers and officers who helped him, he would have been swallowed by the snake over the Easter holiday," said Supt Katam.
He added: "It's very mysterious, this ability to lift the man onto the tree. I've never heard of this before."

The police officer said they took the snake to a sanctuary in Malindi town but it escaped overnight, probably from a gap under the door in the room where it was kept.
"We are still seriously looking for the snake," said Supt Katam. "We want to arrest the snake because any one of us could fall a victim."

Police nab Norwegian pair during high-speed sex

OSLO (AFP) - - A Norwegian man faces a heavy fine and a driving ban after police caught him having sex with his girlfriend while speeding on the motorway, police said Monday.

The unnamed couple, a 28-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman, were caught in the act late on Easter Sunday by traffic police on the E18 highway, some 40 kilometres (25 miles) west of Oslo.

Officers who clocked the couple's silver Mazda 323 racing at 133 kilometres per hour in a 100 zone realised they were doing more than just breaking the speed limit, police told AFP.

"It was veering from one side to the other because the woman was sitting on the man's lap while he was driving and doing the act, shall we say," said Tor Stein Hagen, a superintendent with Soendre Buskerund district police.

"He couldn't see much because her back was in the way," he added.

"Why they did it on a highway with such a high risk we don't know."

After following the couple for nearly a kilometre, officers pulled the car over at a service station.

"We have taken away his driving licence because of the danger that he caused," Hagen said.

Prosecutors will decide within the next week what his punishment will be, with police having filmed the incident to use as evidence against the driver.

Hagen said he expected the man to face a fine of "several thousand Norwegian crowns" and a lengthy driving ban.

Warm fuzzy experiment

Tisch School of the Arts student Kacie Kinzer created the tweenbot as a kind of art experiment. In her words:

I wondered: could a human-like object traverse sidewalks and streets along with us, and in so doing, create a narrative about our relationship to space and our willingness to interact with what we find in it? More importantly, how could our actions be seen within a larger context of human connection that emerges from the complexity of the city itself? To answer these questions, I built robots.

Quite heartwarming to see ppl help this cute fella go around to it's destination :)

US Coverart

Square Enix have revealed the first glimpse at the US box art for Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete on BluRay, set to be released in the West in June, with a Japanese release just around the corner.

The box art is distinctly different to the Japanese version and focuses more on the combat between Cloud and Sephiroth, a central point of the story. They're shown fighting against the backdrop of Edge, the city on the outskirts of Midgar where much of the movie takes place.

This boxart is probably placeholder and will be tweaked and changed some before the final release, but this is most likely also set to be the final art with only small changes left to be made.

Japanese Coverart

Some Changes from the Originial Advent Children movie

- Nozue and the others changed parts they were bothered by, but there’s a lot of really detailed bits and you might not realize all of them if you don’t watch closely. As an example, some facial expressions are different such as when Cloud wakes up after being carried home by Reno and Rude.

- In addition to the climactic scene from the original 20 minute version, they’ve also added some direction linking the children with the phones from it.

- Omnislash ver. 5 has become ver. 6, including elements they originally wanted to have.

- Like the blood during battles, they wanted to portray Geostigma more realistically. They weren’t sure what to do with it for a long time, but from around the time of CC started to think it should be more realistic. With that ‘painfulness’ it just seems false, and you don’t get the sense that it is a horrible disease.

- They wanted to have Case of Denzel from On the Way to a Smile as a bonus feature in some form for a long time. It was decided at it would be animated from the start, and there were ideas such as having voice overs with still images, etc. before finally settling on animation.

- Episode Denzel being an animated extra has no connection with Last Order having being include on the previous DVD.

- Episode Denzel is about 26 minutes long. Nomura was in charge of character design for Johnny and Ruvie, and attended the voice recordings, and final supervising work. The OVA features chocobos; this is because the director is a big fan of FFVII, and wanted to add that to show that chocobos are alive and well after the disasters in FFVII.

- For the limited edition package, they asked the person who designed FFVIIAC’s limited edition package again.

- The regular edition is in a black plastic case. The PS3 bundle and FFXIII demo set have different package designs, but they have the same kind of case as the AC limited edition. Except for the regular edition, they are both limited edition version and there’s no plans at present for another pressing of them.

- The overseas release date hasn’t been announced (lol yes it has), but is planned to be released soon. The image of Cloud and Sephiroth facing each other is the cover for the overseas version.

12 quick tips for boosting your happiness at work

1. Check for eyestrain by putting your hand to your forehead in a salute. If your eyes feel relieved, your work space is too bright.

2. Sit up straight with your shoulders down — every time I adjust my sitting position, I instantly feel more energetic and cheerier.

3. Get a phone headset. I resisted for a long time, because it looks so preposterous, but it’s really much more comfortable. Also, it lets me pace while I talk on the phone, which also looks preposterous, but is energizing.

4. Don’t keep candy on your desk. Studies show that people are much more likely to snack when a treat is within easy reach, and a handful of M&Ms each day could mean a weight gain of five pounds by year’s end.

5. Never say “yes” on the phone; instead, say, “I’ll get back to you.” When you’re actually speaking to someone, the desire to be accommodating is very strong, and can lead you to say “yes” without enough consideration. Along the same lines…

6. When deciding whether to say “yes,” imagine that you’re accepting a job that you’ll have to do next week. Don’t agree to something just because it seems so far off that it doesn’t seem onerous.

7. Don’t let yourself get too hungry. My husband goes without eating for hours and hours at a time, so once, trying to be helpful, I bought him a big bag of granola to keep in his desk. He ate the whole bag in one day and ended up sick as a dog. Lesson: eat regularly.

8. Take care of difficult calls, tasks, or emails as quickly as possible. Procrastinating makes them harder; getting them done gives a big boost of relieved energy.

9. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, think hard about how you spend your time. Be honest. How much time do you spend surfing the internet, looking for things you’ve misplaced, or doing a task that’s really someone else’s job? Also…

10. Let yourself stay ignorant of things you don’t need to know.

11. Go outside at least once a day, and if possible, take a walk. The sunlight and activity is good for your focus, mood, and retention of information.

12. Say “Good morning” to everyone. Social contact is cheering, and if you feel that you’re on good terms with all the people in your office, you’ll be happier each day.
Also, it’s polite.
