Jail, ban for dangerous driving

By Elena Chong

A YOUNG motorist who beat the red lights and caused the death of a taxi driver by dangerous driving was sentenced to a total of seven months' jail on Friday.

Bimond Ang Mao Shun, 21, who is now in national service, was also banned from driving for six years. But he is appealing against the sentence. Bail of $15,000 was offered.

A probation report called for by District Judge Low Wee Ping ruled out probation for Ang who had earlier admitted to causing Mr Mohammed Faizal Sumawi's death and injuring the front-seat passenger, Ms Tjoa Shyet Teng, 20, by doing an act so rashly as to endanger life.

The accident happened at around 2.15am at the junction of Penang Road and Killiney Road on July 5 last year.

The court heard that Ang was driving his car with his girlfriend along the centre lane of Penang Road when he beat the lights and hit the 35-year-old's cab, which had the right of way and travelling along Killiney Road towards River Valley Road.

The taxi was hurled to the left of the junction, overturned and landed on the footpath. Ang's car had also veered left across the junction, mounted the traffic island and hit the bollards before it came to a complete stop.

M'sia's Transport Minister joins morning rush

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat joined the morning rush on the KTM Komuter and Light Rail Transit (LRT) systems to better understand commuters' problems.

He took the KTM Komuter from the Bank Negara station to KL Sentral, then boarded the LRT to Bangsar.

During the ride, Ong spoke to passengers and listened to their feedback on how to further improve the urban public transport system.

At a press conference later, Ong said the waiting time for LRT trains will be reduced from three minutes to two once six new trains became operational next month.

Ong added that another challenge was to cut the KTM Komuter waiting period.

Photographs of the anrgy showdown, taken by a startled neighbour, were uploaded to a local community website.

They show Sun perched on the first floor ledge while his lover is confronted by her un-named husband inside.

"My family is ashamed and none of my own neighbours will talk to me any more," said Sun.
