The Duck is Dead

A woman brought her very limp duck, Cuddles, into a veterinary surgeon. As she laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his #20 stethoscope and listened to the bird's chest.

After a moment or two, the vet shook his head sadly and said, "I'm very sorry, Cuddles has passed away."

The distressed woman wailed, "Are you sure?"

"Yes, I am sure. The duck is dead," replied the vet.

"How can you be so sure?" she protested.. "I mean you haven't done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something."

The vet rolled his eyes, turned around and left the room.

He returned a few minutes later with a black Labrador Retriever.

As the duck's owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed the duck from top to bottom. He then looked up at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head.

The vet patted the dog on the head and took it out of the room.

A few minutes later he returned with a cat.

The cat jumped on the table and also delicately sn iffed the bird from head to foot. The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly and strolled out of the room.

The vet looked at the woman and said, "I'm sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely, 100% certifiably, a dead duck."

The vet turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys and produced a bill, which he handed to the woman.

The duck's owner, still in shock, took the bill. "$250?" she cried, "$250 just to tell me my duck is dead?"

The vet shrugged, "I'm sorry. If you had just taken my word for it, the bill would have been $20. But with the Lab Report and the Cat Scan, it's now $250."

Disney to buy Marvel for $4bn

Walt Disney on Monday unveiled a surprise $4bn bid for Marvel Entertainment, ending a deal-making drought in the media sector and paving the way for Iron Man, Spider-Man and Captain America to be united with Mickey Mouse and Hannah Montana.

The agreed deal is structured as a cash and stock offer, worth $50 a share based on Disney’s closing share price on Friday. Shares in Marvel jumped $10.35 or 27 per cent to a record high of $49 on the announcement. Disney shares were 1.6 per cent lower at $26.40.

The transaction would combine Marvel’s globally recognised brand and 5,000 characters with Disney’s creative skills, portfolio of entertainment properties, and “a business structure that maximises the value of creative properties across multiple platforms and territories,” said Bob Iger, Disney’s chief executive.

Disney is offering $30 per share in cash plus about 0.745 Disney shares for each Marvel share, but will adjust the amount of cash and stock if necessary at the closing of the deal so that Disney stock makes up no less than 40 per cent of the total.

The offer underscores Disney’s reputation as one of the media groups that has best weathered the storm of plunging advertising revenues and weak consumer spending. It also highlights the continued balance sheet strength of some of the sector’s largest groups.

The combination, which will depend on clearance from antitrust authorities, could bring brands that have become highly successful box office franchises to Disney’s studio. At present, Spider-Man and Iron Man films are made by other studios.

Disney could also bring the cartoon characters to its children’s television channels and websites, and to theme parks around the world.

“Disney is the perfect home for Marvel’s fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses,” said Ike Perlmutter, Marvel’s chief executive and largest shareholder.

“This is an unparalleled opportunity for Marvel to build upon its vibrant brand and character properties by accessing Disney’s tremendous global organisation and infrastructure around the world,” he added.

Man hit by girlfriend divorced, has a daughter

A man who was caught on video being hit my a woman repeatedly without retaliating is a director of a local property firm, said Lianhe Wanbao.

Last week, videos of the incident were published in AsiaOne, in which it showed him standing still while his girlfriend used her shoe to smack him repeatedly in the groin and face.

An acquaintance of the couple who called the paper's hotline said the man is a successful 41-year-old who manages more than 100 property agents at his firm.

According to the caller, the "good-looking" man "looks young for his age", and is popular with women.

The Chinese daily reported that he drives a flashy car and stays in a condominium.

The acquaintance also revealed that the man is a divorcee with one daughter, who has been with his "abusive girlfriend" for two years.

Fiery temper

According to the acquaintance there is a 20-year age-gap between the man and his girlfriend.

They were colleagues at the same property firm.

However, the acquaintance said the girl did not pass her probation period at the firm. She got together with the man shortly after she left, and "has been depending on him since".

The acquaintance also said the girlfriend is "pretty, but has a fiery temper".
